Discrimination or Mean?

Scenario : this man and woman were working in the same company, but looking at the age differences, i think the guy just started working and the woman seem to be his supervisor or something. Things to take note : they are different race and gender. So i observed that the woman was being kindda mean to the guy because the way she was communicating with him, as if he's stupid. So looking at this scenario, several things came to my mind :

1. Was she being mean to him because of his race? Racial discrimination. Or
2. Was she being mean to him because he's a man? Gender discrimination. Or
3. Was she being mean to him because she's naturally a MEAN person?

However, say if the scenario was to be changed, where there are 2 men of the same race and one was treating the other badly, people will just he's being a mean bastard. No discrimination issues.

The thing i'm trying to say here is that people are quick to jump to conclusion that it's discrimination and not simply an act of meanness. And discrimination is no doubt more serious than being mean and that's why people like to use it as an excuse.

Another example, where women are not paid as much as men for the same work they are doing. Or if they are not being promoted despite the fact they both work for the same time period. If a woman is not promoted, she will quickly jump to the conclusion that she's being discriminated for her gender. This may be true but at the same time another possibility of the non promotion is the fact that she doesn't work as hard as the man or not as dedicated as the men.

If you see a person being bullied at a work place where he's of a particular 'race' surrounded by a 'majority of another particular race', people would immediately think it's discrimination. Again, it could be discrimination especially if there is racist remarks but another possibility he's being bullied is that people around him simply don't like him or his attitude or the way he works.
